My academic training took place at the University of Santiago de Compostela, where I obtained a PhD in History in 2003. In 2003 I joined the Pablo de Olavide University in Seville where I was ‘Profesor Ayudante’ (Assisant) of Contemporary History from 2007 to 2019 and where I developed much of my research career. I also co-founded the Agroecosystems History Laboratory (https://www.lha.es/es/). Since 2019, I have been Associate Professor of Economic History in the University of Santiago de Compostela and a member of GESPIC research group (https://gespic.usc.es/language/es/). I also joined as researcher the Centro de Investigación Interuniversitario de los Paisajes Atlánticos Culturales (CISPAC, https://cispac.gal/en/) in 2022.

My research started in the fields of Rural and Forest History, and moved to Environmental History, Agroecology and Social History. My research has combined projects in Galicia, Andalusia (Spain) and Latin America. I have primarily worked on three research topics. First, on the analysis of productive transformations between organic and industrial agriculture. My work has been focused on the development of methodologies to adapt the Social Metabolism approach to the characteristics of History and Agriculture. Within this field, I have published several papers in the journals such as Science of the Total Environment, Land Use Policy, Sustainability or Regional Environmental Change. I have also published papers (in Ecological Economics) and books (with Springer) in the narratives of agrarian change in Spain during the twentieth century. The second research topic has been the history of commons in Galicia, manly focusing on the analysis of links between institutional arrangements, identity and cohesion of local communities, and productive changes in landscape. I have published several papers (in Historia Agraria,Historia Ambiental Latinoamericana y Caribeña) and co-authored a book on this topic. The third research topic has been the study of environmental conflicts in historical peasant societies, specifically those that arise during periods of productive change. I have published papers on this topic in Historia Agraria, Global Environment and Ecología Política. Apart from that, I was member of the Editorial Board of Historia Agraria between 2010 and 2019, and since 2020 I member of the Editorial Board of Agua y Territorio. I have three ‘sexenios’ (research periods) recognized (2001-2007, 2008-2013, 2014-2019). I have 587 citations in SCOPUS with a H-index of 15 (https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=55918100400), 511 citations in web of science with an H-Index of 11 (https://www.webofscience.com/wos/author/record/H-4792-2015), and 2343 citations in Google Schoolar with an H-Index of 29 (https://scholar.google.es/citations?user=iQ55o68AAAAJ&hl=es). I have published 25 papers in Web of Science/SCOPUS journals, 8 in other journals, 7 books and 28 book chapters.

I was the Academic Director of the BA in Humanities from the Pablo de Olavide University until 2019 and the coordinator of the BA in Business Administration from the University of Santiago de Compostela between 2019 and 2022. I was also one of the coordinators of the MA ‘Society, Administration and Politics’ from the Pablo de Olavide University and of the PhD Program in ‘Environment and Society’ until 2019. I have been lecturer in several MA during my career, and I have supervised several BA, MA and PhD Thesis (two of them already completed). Currently, I am supervising five PhD Thesis.

I have organized 11 panels at international scientific congresses. As a co-founder of Agroecosystems History Laboratory, I contributed to the development of one of tops research groups in Environmental History in Europe. In this environment, I took part of several experiences of technological transfer, especially linked to our work with traditional wheat varieties and organic producers in Andalusia. In Galicia, I have participated in the Participatory Action Research Project “Barbanza Ecosocial Lab” since 2020 (https://barbanzaecosocial.org/en/homepage/) with RIA Foundation, founded by Santander Foundation and Juana de Vega Foundation. This project is focused on the recovery of local knowledge in landscape management and the promotion of productive experiences in local communities. We have recently secured funding through Biodiversity Foundation projects to continue this experience. (https://www.eoalimenta.org/work/fundacion-carasso-renueva-su-apuesta-por-la-financiacion-de-eo-alimenta). I am part of the EOalimenta transfer project, which aims to create a local agrifood system on the border between Galicia and Asturias. Since January 2024 I have been publishing a monthly opinion article on agroecology, sustainability and history in the newspaper NOS Diario.
