Lourenzo Fernández Prieto (A Devesa-Ribadeo, 1961) has been Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Santiago de Compostela since 2005. Visiting Profesor: Princeton University (Oates Fellow, Council of Humanities · Department of History & Department of Spanish and Portuguese Languages &Literatures (2015); CUNY Graduate Center · Program in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literatures; United States · New York City (2013); University College Cork · Department of Geography. Ireland (1996); PostDoc Position at Institute of Historical Research, United Kingdom, London, England (1991). He is the scientific director of the CISPAC (University Research Center for Cultural Atlantic Landscapes). He is also President of the Society for the Study of Agrarian History (SEHA) and member of the Real Academia Galega since 2023. Specialized in the history of rural societies and agricultural technological change, he has carried out and directed research work related to the construction of modernity in the rural world and on the time of civil war and dictatorship. He is a member of the editorial board of different historical research journals and has participated in and organized numerous conferences and colloquiums in the field. He was Vice Chancellor for Institutional Relations at USC (2007-2009) and Director of the Departments of Contemporary and American History (until 2016) and of USC History (2020-2021).
He was PI in numerous R+D+i projects including; Laboratorio EcoSocial do Barbanza - FUNDACIÓN BIODIVERSIDAD 2023 (2024-2025); Las dos vias de cambio y desarrollo agrario del siglo XX. La agricultura atlantica, 1880-2000 (2021-2024); Políticas agrarias en un contexto autoritario, de la autarquia a la revolución verde: consecuencias en el agroecosistema, la economía y la sociedad rural (1940-1980) (2011-2013); and Agrarian History fos Sustainable Agriculture (2004). He was coordinator of the REVOLTA Network of Agroecology, composed of eight research groups of Galician universities and seeks to be a place of encounter and debate on agroecology and the Galician rural environment (2010-2011; 2014-2015). He also coordinated and directed research through agreements and contracts, such as the Laboratorio Ecosocial do Barbanza (2020-2022); Actuacións dentro do Plan Cuatrienal de Memoria Histórica (2021-2024); Eo Alimenta (2020-2023) among the most recent ones. He directed the Interuniversity Project ‘Nomes e Voces’, dedicated to the investigation of Franco's violence in Galicia (2006-2010) and ‘La socialización en la guerra contra la República y los apoyos de la dictadura franquista. Recruitment, mobilisation and participation in the ‘Ejército sublevado’ (1936-1939)’ (2009-2012). He has directed 22 competitive research projects and was responsible for 39 research agreements and contracts with public and private entities.
