Presentation: Sugar. A history of human civilisation Ulbe Bosma (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam)

HISTAGRA organises the presentation of the book: Sugar. A history of human civilisation by Ulbe Bosma (Free University of Amsterdam).
On 31 January at 12 noon at the Faculty of Geography and History, Ulbe Bosma, professor at the Free University of Amsterdam, will present his latest publication, Azúcar. A history of human civilisation. He will be accompanied by the IP of HISTAGRA, Lourenzo Fernández Prieto.
Ulbe Bosma holds a PhD in History from the University of Leiden and is Professor of International Comparative Social History at the Free University of Amsterdam. His main fields of interest are labour histories, international labour migration and commodity frontiers.
The world history of sugar and the world history of capitalism are closely linked. Ulbe Bosma, in this first truly global account of such a crucial commodity, takes you to the fields of Indian peasants, the trading houses of Chinese merchants, the monopolising efforts of New York industrialists and the rebellions of enslaved sugar workers in Cuba to trace how something so mundane came to play a crucial role in creating the world we inhabit today. This book is global history at its best
