Scientific meeting: Shaking up pasts, re-signifying presents and re-writing futures

Scientific Meeting: Removing pasts, re-signifying presents and re-writing futures. Debates, Synergies and Proposals for Intervention on Places of Memory

Next Friday 4th November, CISPAC will host the Scientific Meeting: Removing pasts, re-signifying presents and re-writing futures. Debates, Synergies and Proposals for Intervention on Places of Memory, within the Four-Year Plan for Democratic Memory 2022, of which HISTAGRA is a member.

In September 2022 the Xunta de Galicia and the University of Santiago de Compostela signed the collaboration agreement by which the university team formed by researchers from HISTAGRA, SINCRISIS, IMELGA and MEDICINA GENÓMICA will carry out the tasks of documentation, exhumation and analysis of the remains of people murdered by Franco's violence, as one of the actions of the Democratic Memory Plan. The tasks to be carried out are: location, exhumation and identification of victims, dissemination of the results and recognition as well as the promotion of places and spaces of memory.

Precisely in relation to the latter, we are organising an interdisciplinary meeting at CISPAC where different specialists in film, art, history, archaeology and genetics of the State will debate and show the work being done in other parts of Spain and Europe.

This meeting will look at the following questions from a multiple, international and transdisciplinary perspective:

- What defines spaces as "places of memory"? What are their limits?

- How can we intervene in places of violence in order to re-signify them as democratic memory? What language and media do we use?

- How do we distinguish the role of the historical narrative in artistic representation?

- To whom do we address public memory policies? What is their present and, above all, their future?

- How to express commemoration materially?
