Ramón Villares wins the Trasalba Award for his work in Galician culture
HISTAGRA researcher Ramón Villares wins the Trasalba Award
The Board of Trustees of the Otero Pedrayo Foundation has agreed to award the 2026 Trasalba Prize to HISTAGRA member Ramón Villares in recognition of his intellectual career and ongoing commitment to Galician culture. The decision was taken by the organisation's Governing Committee, which highlighted his ‘dedication to the Otero cause’ and his many years of research into the Xeración Nós from a historical and geographical perspective, as well as his essay Fuga y retorno de Adrián Solovio (Galaxia, 2018), considered by the Foundation to be one of the key works for understanding the figure and thought of Ramón Otero Pedrayo today.
Ramón Villares Paz (Cazás-Xermade, 1951) has been Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Santiago de Compostela since 1987. He was Director of the Department of Contemporary History (1983-1986), Dean of the Faculty of Geography and History (1986-1990) and Rector of the University of Santiago (1990-1994), founding member and President of the Spanish Association of Contemporary History (1996-2002) and Director in Galicia of the Menendez Pelayo International University, UIMP (1997-2005). He is also a Full Member of the Royal Galician Academy and Honorary Researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences (University of Lisbon) (since 2011). He is a member of the Editorial Board of Marcial Pons, Ediciones de Historia (Madrid) and a member of the Advisory Board of magazines such as Historia Social (Valencia), Ler História, Análise Social (Lisbon), and Ayer, revista de Historia contemporánea (Madrid). He is a member of the boards of trustees of the Museo do Pobo Galego, the Luis Seoane Foundation, the Otero Pedrayo Foundation and the Juana de Vega Foundation. He was President of the Consello da Cultura Galega from 2006 to 2019.
