The Pasados Incómodos series returns to HISTAGRA

The Pasados Incómodos series returns to HISTAGRA: Queral Solé and the Valley of the Fallen

On 8 November, at 7 p.m., a lecture by Queral Solé, PhD in Contemporary History and lecturer at the University of Barcelona, will take place in Room 13 of the Faculty of Geography and History, entitled Reflexións históricas ao redor do val de Cuelgamuros (Historical reflections around the Valley of the Fallen).

Professor Solé is one of the leading authorities on research into the meaning of the Val de los Caídos mausoleum, directing an investigation into the identification of the bodies buried in this space: The Franco regime wanted to fill the Valley of the Fallen with bones once it had been built. To this end, the civil governors were asked, with the collaboration of the town councils, to locate where the soldiers were buried in the villages and then transfer them to the mausoleum. Although the Valley of the Fallen was originally intended to be only for the dead of the Francoist side, in the end the remains of the deceased of the Republican forces were also taken there. In the latter case, the families did not know that the bodies were being transferred, and if they did know, they had no option to object.

Before removing the bodies, Queralt Solé and UB researcher David Tormo drew up a report for each of the people exhumed, up to a total of 65. In each case, they reconstructed the path followed by the body until it was deposited in the Valley of the Fallen. The research was mainly carried out using provincial and municipal archives, as well as those of the Benedictine community located in the Valley of the Fallen. The purpose of these reports is to hand them over to the families.
