Elvira Varela Bao, contributor to nomesevoces.org and HISTAGRA, has died
On July 15, 2020, the collaborator of nomesevoces.org Elvira Varela Bao, daughter of the Galician artist Benardino Varela and the republican Elvira Bao founder of the Female Republican Association of A Coruña, passed away.
Bernardino Varela Docampo (c.1889), Galician, secretary of A Nosa Terra for a period, and member of the Irmandades da Fala de A Coruña since 1918. Detained for a few days in the summer of 1936, he could not continue to serve as a teacher in the Naval School and became a commissioner.
Elvira Bao Maceiras (c.1891), –Galician and president of the Women's Republican Association, alternating presidency and vice-presidency with Amparo López Geán- teacher in the Sanatorium of Oza, spent three months in the Coruña prison and could not recover her employment from teacher.
Elvira Varela Bao died at 94 years of age, after a life dedicated to rescuing the legacy of the Irmandades da Fala generation in 1916 in A Coruña from oblivion.
