WE REFUGEES. PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES
The history of the twentieth century is traversed by the drama of military conflicts, resulting in millions of people becoming displaced persons, exiles, expatriates and refugees.Collective dramas and individual dramas. The history of humanity itself has been built on experiences such as forced displacement, flight and asylum. The We Refugees exhibition adopts the title of a well-known essay by Hannah Arendt, published in 1943 in the Menorah Journal, a Jewish magazine in New York. Its aim is to signal and highlight the universality of exile and the construction of democratic societies under the protection of the right to asylum.
To complete and accompany the exhibition, a comprehensive programme of activities has been designed, beginning last May with two seminars, directed by Matías G. Rodríguez-Mouriño and Santiago Olmo, and focusing respectively on the musical and literary manifestations of exiles and refugees.
In September and October, some of the artists participating in the exhibition will be given their own voices through various activities, such as a workshop directed by Elo Vega and Rogelio López Cuenca; a dialogue between Carole Alfarah and the co-curator of the exhibition, Santiago Olmo; a lecture by Claudio Zulian and a performance by Jesús Palomino. On the other hand, specific aspects of the refugee experience will also be addressed through the critical perspective of specialists or scholars such as the co-curator of the Piedad Solans exhibition, the critic and historian Manuel García, expert in the Spanish Republican exile, or the professor of contemporary history, Lourenzo Fernández Prieto in the USC.
