The researcher of HISTAGRA Margarita Barral Martínez presents a report at the VIII Convegno Internazionale di Studi La Città Altra / The Other City that takes place in Naples from October 25 to 27, 2018. Her work is: The cultural management of new urban spaces as City image: Santiago de Compostela (1909-1940).

About the work:

At the end of the s. XIX, from the urban point of view, the city of Santiago de Compostela was still defined by the contrasts: next to wide squares and narrow streets was an important network of dark alleys and steep slopes. Some contrasts that were also found in the buildings, where religious temples and other palaces coexisted with buildings that belonged to the most humble inhabitants. The Galician Regional Exhibition that took place in the city in 1909, coinciding with the celebration of the Holy Year, from the urban point of view consolidated the opening to the south of the modern widening, in the old place where today is the Campus Vida de la University of Santiago. To know the evolution of this space, as well as the meaning of the Exhibition from different points of view (economic, social and political) is the pretense of this communication.
