HISTAGRA and the Memory of Democracy

Histagra is coordinating the investigation into the mass graves from the Franco regime in Serantes (Ferrol), Orilla (Carral) and Boisaca (Santiago de Compostela)

On Tuesday 16 March, the USC and the Provincial Council of A Coruña signed a research agreement under which the HISTAGRA Research Group will coordinate historical, archaeological and forensic research into the mass graves from the Franco regime in Serantes (Ferrol), Beira (Carral) and Boisaca (Santiago de Compostela).

The initiative, with a budget of 150,000 euros, will enable research to be carried out, test pits to be dug to establish the actual location of the mass graves, their condition and general state, and the recovery of some of the possible remains of victims at these three strategic sites.

To ensure scientific rigour, the work will be carried out by specialists in history, archaeology and forensic anthropology, led and coordinated by HISTAGRA-CISPAC researchers Lourenzo Fernández Prieto and Antonio Miguez Macho. The team also includes USC lecturers Daniel Lanero Táboas, Jose Carlos Sánchez Pardo and Edgar Camarós, all of whom are affiliated members of CISPAC.

The project incorporates a social and educational dimension that includes the production of an audiovisual piece to document the process and its emotional impact, as well as the production of academic publications and the cataloguing of specialist literature, which will be held in the library of the Faculty of Geography and History at the USC.
