Workshop in Colonisation Villages: Castro de Rei
Creative workshop in Castro de Rei
In March 2025, under the agreement signed between the Castro de Rei Town Council and the University of Santiago de Compostela, with the support of the Lugo Provincial Council, several artistic creation workshops will be held, focusing on the theme of the villages colonised during Franco's regime. On this occasion, the work, directed by visual artists and USC professors Vicente Blanco and Salvador Cidrás, will be showcased in the village of Matodoso and will take place in the town council's educational centre.
The village of Matodoso, designed by architects Mariano Fernández Rico, Odón Fernández Lavandera and Santiago García Mesalles, began to be built in 1956.
The expressive use of stone pieces in significant elements of Matodoso's public buildings, the urbanisation of the public space that connects them and the design of the volumes, with sloping roofs, no eaves and simple geometries, are design resources that bring modern solutions closer to the identity and tradition of the typical rural centres in the area.
