VISIT OF THE DIRECTOR GENERAL OF DEMOCRATIC MEMORY, ZORAIDA HIJOSA AND HER TEAM TO LAUNCH THE AGREEMENT BETWEEN THE MINISTRY OF TERRITORIAL POLICY AND DEMOCRATIC MEMORY AND THE UNIVERSITY OF SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA (HISTAGRA-CISPAC GROUP) FOR THE ELABORATION OF THE STATEWIDE CENSUS OF VICTIMS

 

This Friday 9th May the Director General of Democratic Memory, Zoraida Hijosa, the Director of the Exhumations Division Jaime del Rey Gómez-Morata and the Head of Area of the Directorate General, José Luis Muñoz Romano will be in Santiago de Compostela to participate in the meeting to launch the agreement for the elaboration of the state census of victims. The meeting will be attended by the team from the University of Santiago de Compostela belonging to the HISTAGRA-CISPAC Group coordinated by professors Lourenzo Fernández Prieto and Antonio Míguez Macho.

 

The meeting will start at 10:00 h. at the CISPAC headquarters and will proceed to formalise the monitoring and work teams that had carried out the research tasks throughout Spain, the composition of the advisory committees formed by specialists from different Spanish and Latin American universities and the implementation of the specific database that will bring together the results achieved.

 

 

 

At 12:30 they will be in Vilagarcía de Arousa to visit in the Rubiáns cemetery the monument inaugurated in December 2024 on the occasion of the exhumation of the mass grave that had been carried out under the Galician Democratic Memory Plan 2021-2024, and then at 13:00 they will be received by the mayor of the town, Alberto Varela, at the town hall.

 

The agreement, which runs until March 2027, has as its main objective the elaboration of a first state census of victims of the 1936 coup, the War and the Dictatorship for the period 1936-1939, as well as a preliminary methodological proposal for the temporary extension of the census to the period 1940-1942. In both cases the census will include non-combatant casualties resulting in death. The census will collect victims from the two zones and from all the territories that in 1936-1939 belonged to the Spanish State, including the protectorate of Morocco, Sahara and Guinea.

 

The press will be attended at 11:30 at CISPAC at the end of the meeting, or 12:30 at the Rubiáns cemetery in Vilagarcía de Arousa.

13:00-14:00. Meeting with the Mayor's Office in the Town Hall of Vilagarcía de Arousa.
