HISTAGRA collaborates in the redevelopment of the former Prisión Habilitada and Prisión Central de Santa Isabel in Compostela
The HISTAGRA Group is part of and promoted the initiative of resignification of the old prison of Santa Isabel, in Santiago de Compostela.
Next Tuesday the 3rd of December at 17:00 will take place the inauguration of a landmark on the site that occupied the Central Prison of Santa Isabel, in the area of the old barracks in Galeras. Remember that between 1939 and 1946 it functioned as an Enabled Prison and Central Prison, where thousands of prisoners of the Franco Dictatorship of different origins passed through. It was built in the 18th century and is now a sports complex.
Its use as a prison began at the end of 1939 and lasted until 1946. In that period of time it was, together with Celanova, the largest in Galicia: in 1943 there were 1,595 political prisoners and in the year of its closure there were 907 left.
Histagra participated in the process that led to the resignification of this space as a Place of Democratic Memory, as well as in the design of the panel that will be placed, together with the Galeras Platform, the main promoter of the event. HISTAGRA-CISPAC researcher Antonio Miguez will be representing the project at the event.
UNVEILING OF THE PLAQUE IN MEMORY OF THE THOUSANDS OF PRISONERS, VICTIMS OF FRANCO'S VIOLENCE, WHO PASSED THROUGH THE PRISON-BARRACKS OF SANTA ISABEL, WHICH WAS USED AS A PRISON BETWEEN 1939 AND 1946.
