New HISTAGRA 2024 Seminar
HISTAGRA organises a new research seminar
The researcher from the University of Vigo, Poonam Pandey, will give a research seminar at CISPAC on Wednesday 24 April. Organised by the HISTAGRA Group through member Stefania Barca, Professor Pandey will lecture on "Are some stories worth repeating? Apolitics and the practice of bringing the Green Revolution to eastern India".
Poonam Pandey is Maria Zambrano Research Fellow at the University of Vigo. Principal Researcher at the Laboratory of Post-Growth Innovation at the University of Vigo.
About the conference:
The epic narrative of the Green Revolution often presents it as a virtuous moment in the history of modern Western science that saved many countries in the South from hunger and starvation in the mid-20th century. This narrative, despite being the subject of a wide range of scathing criticisms, continues to enchant policymakers and influence policymaking. International support for the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) is a case in point. Similarly, in 2010, the Indian government launched its ambitious 'Bringing the Second Green Revolution to Eastern India (BGREI)' programme, focusing on agricultural modernisation in the eastern states. In this paper Pandey will employ a theoretical framework based on the literature on food regimes to unpack the question of the political relevance and political appeal of the epic narrative of the Green Revolution in the contemporary Indian context.
