The team of the Democratic Memory Plan is searching for one of the largest graves in Galicia, located in the cemetery do Val (Narón).

The research team of Democratic Memory of the University of Santiago started in Santa María do Val (Narón) the process of searching for one of the largest graves of victims of the 1936 coup in Galicia.

There are at least 50 families searching for their relatives killed after the military uprising in Ferrol in July 1936 who may be buried in the cemetery of El Val. The location of this grave is part of the Galician Democratic Memory Plan, with the support of the Secretary of State for Democratic Memory and the Xunta de Galicia, which entrusted the actions to a multidisciplinary research team coordinated from the USC and commanded by the HISTAGRA group.

According to the research carried out so far, the University team is looking for more than one grave, taking into account the information gathered and given the large number of people buried there, on different dates, more than 50 individuals murdered between 1936 and 1939 and possibly also in the post-war period. This is a matter well known to historians and very present in the memory of neighbours and families.

The Asociación Cultural Memoria Histórica e Democrática de Ferrol is also taking part in the investigation.

This is an unprecedented phenomenon in our history, which allows us to understand the magnitude of the violence of the coup in Galicia. A public appeal is made to the whole of society to try to locate the different burial sites and to complete the identification of the relatives of the victims who are buried here.
