*The postdoc-position in the social and economic history group*

The postdoc will work within the NWO-funded project /"Nature or nurture? A
search for the institutional and biological determinants of life expectancy
in Europe during the early modern period"/ which examines the relationship
between the development of the European Marriage Pattern, changes in
fertility and in institutional developments directed towards elderly care,
amongst others in the form of institutions for collective action. The three
researchers that will be employed for this project -funded by the Dutch
Council for Scientific Research- will become part of a larger
interdisciplinary team of historians, economists, sociologists and jurists
that focusses on various form of institutions for collective action in the
past and today.
The postdoc involved in this subproject will be concentrate on the
European-wide differences in institutional provisions for elderly care in
early modern Europe. The starting point of this study, which will be
'countered' by a study on the biological determinants of ageing in early
modern Europe, is the European Marriage Pattern. This phenomenon is often
brought in relationship with the decrease in intergenerational support due to
the typical features of the EMP-households, such as neolocality, nuclear
households, small age gaps between husband and wife, and low fertility. This
postdoc position will examine the effects of changes in institutional
diversity in elderly care provisions across Europe. The postdoc will work
closely together with another postdoc and a PhD-student employed for this
project and is expected to actively contribute also to the work of other
members of the research team both in Utrecht and elsewhere in Europe.

The postdoc will be based at Utrecht University, and be part of the research
team led by prof. Dr. Tine De Moor and will as such also be part of the
department of social and economic history led by prof. Bas van Bavel.
